At Sichuan Chuanguo Boiler Co., Ltd. (SCBC), operational excellence is driven not by grand gestures, but by focused, team-led initiatives that tackle real manufacturing pain points with ingenuity and discipline. In its latest wave of PMO (Project Management Office) achievements, SCBC has recognized four outstanding projects with Excellence Awards—each delivering measurable impact in automation, cost control, design optimization, and workshop-level innovation.
These grassroots-driven breakthroughs reflect SCBC's deep commitment to lean manufacturing, cross-functional collaboration, and sustainable value creation.
1.Flexible Magnetic Track Oscillating Arc Automatic Welding for Oil Rig Structures
Manual welding in oil rig fabrication long posed challenges: high labor intensity, excessive spatter, heavy post-weld grinding, and inconsistent quality (90% first-time inspection pass rate). The team introduced an innovative solution: aflexible magnetic track paired with an oscillating arc welding trolley, enabling full automation of critical curved welds. They further pioneered a “one-operator-to-two-units” model to maximize efficiency.
✅Results:
-100% increase in welding productivity(human efficiency doubled)
-50% reduction in labor costs
-Weld pass rate improved from 90% to 100%
- Spatter nearly eliminated; grinding workload reduced by80%
2.Precision Cable Cost Control for Gas-Fired Units
Excessive cable inventory, blind procurement based on design lists, and high secondary handling costs plagued gas-fired projects. The team shifted from “buy-to-design” to“buy-to-actual-need”through a three-pronged approach: phased procurement, on-site measurement validation, and load-based recalibration.
✅Results:
- Cable surplus strictly controlled tounder 5%
- Drastic reduction in storage burden and material rehandling costs
- Capital tied up in excess inventory significantly freed
3.Optimization of Header Nozzle Stub Length
Design over-specification led to unnecessary material waste and inefficient secondary machining of header nozzle stubs. Working closely with the design department, the teamshortened the standard stub length by 20mm—a small change with big impact. Crucially, they introducedlength differentiation by material type(e.g., carbon steel vs. alloy steel) to prevent mix-ups.
✅Results:
- Eliminated material waste at the source
- Mitigated risk of material misidentification through smart dimensional coding
- Optimizationinstitutionalized as a mandatory design standard, ensuring long-term cost savings across all future projects
4.In-House Redesign of Header Rotating Support Frames
Traditional roller frames were expensive, incompatible with narrow-pitch headers, and prone to causing surface damage via V-shaped supports. Using leftover steel offcuts from gas cutting operations, the teamself-developed a new rotating support framewith a “narrower width, larger diameter” design.
✅Results:
- Successfully supports40mm narrow-pitch headers, meeting demand for ~120 special headers annually
-Zero surface damageduring rotation or welding
- Improved welding deformation control, reducing post-weld correction time
- Mobile trolley designed for easy transport—zero investment, full flexibility
These four Excellence Award projects embody SCBC's philosophy:“Innovation as a daily practice.”From automating complex welds to turning scrap metal into smart tooling, every initiative demonstrates how empowered teams, technical rigor, and process discipline can drive tangible business value.
More than hardware and heavy steel, SCBC is building something equally vital:a culture of continuous improvement, ownership, and intelligent problem-solving—the true hallmarks of industrial soft power in the new era of advanced manufacturing.
